Technical lead, engineering manager and hands-on .NET architect.

I have been writing software professionally since 2014 and leading the people who write it for most of the last five years. I have taken several greenfield platforms from an empty repository to production in regulated financial markets, hired and grown the teams around them, and stayed close enough to the code to still be the one in the debugger when something breaks.

Experience

Technical Lead Derivative Path

2021 – Present

Capital-markets fintech · Remote

Derivative Path gives regional banks and corporates the derivatives infrastructure that used to exist only inside bulge-bracket dealers. I have led a succession of teams and product lines there, most of them greenfield.

Hedge Accounting current

Building the firm’s hedge accounting platform from scratch.

  • Lead a team of four engineers and a product owner: planning, code review, mentoring, and interviewing candidates for the group.
  • Run the team AI-native. Claude and GitHub Copilot are part of the daily delivery loop, and I set the conventions for where they help, where a human reviews, and how AI-assisted work is checked before it merges.
  • Work closely with the product owner to turn requirements into specified behavior at ticket level, and read the Big Four hedge accounting guidance directly so the architecture follows the standard itself.
  • Own the architecture: event-driven design with event sourcing (Marten) as the system of record, chosen for the auditability that accounting and regulatory review demand.
  • Demo working software to the firm’s senior leadership and present the technical approach behind it, translating architectural trade-offs into business terms so direction is agreed before the build starts.
  • Represent the group in firm-wide architecture forums, where I pushed for CDM as the internal trade representation across the firm. Hedge accounting is the first system running on it.

Middle Office, Data Ingestion & Analytics

Led three teams in turn, moving to whichever one needed a lead at the time.

  • Cut our most critical job from over 50 minutes to 15, resolving the instability that had begun to affect daily operations and the business as a whole.
  • Standardized the firm’s ingestion pipelines onto a single pattern and added the failure detection they had been missing.
  • Modernized the legacy ingestion tooling and its interface. Automating steps that had been manual removed hours of routine work from the operations day.
  • Designed the analytics platform architecture end to end: event-driven ingestion feeding a star-schema warehouse that serves the firm’s BI use cases.

Commodities Platform greenfield

  • Led a team of up to six engineers, delivering a new commodities platform from an empty repository to production in five months.
  • Worked directly with one of the company’s founders to get it over the line. The delivery was what allowed the firm to sign an important client, and the commodities business has signed several more since.
  • Set the delivery foundation: CI/CD with AWS CDK, ECR and ECS, plus code review, automated code scanning and unit testing as non-negotiables.

FXIP greenfield

A white-label portal that lets banks offer their own clients instant FX execution, priced and filled through external liquidity providers.

  • My first lead role at the firm: a team of four engineers delivering the first production release.
  • Built the Goldman Sachs integration that supplied pricing and execution behind the portal.

Senior Software Engineer USC Institute for Creative Technologies

2019 – 2022

  • Delivered software for medical simulation training, used to rehearse clinical decision-making under pressure.
  • Built conversational, embodied characters for Virtual Human, the system the US Army uses to train soldiers on the rules and procedures they are expected to follow in the field.
  • Hardened research prototypes into software the lab could run, deploy and maintain without their original authors.

Full-stack .NET Developer Zaytion

2018 – 2019

via Toptal · Multitenant financial web application on Azure

  • Designed and built a domain-specific language operating over a graph of objects: a functional parser (Sprache) compiling Excel-like formulas into C# expression trees.
  • Refactored the data access layer behind a generic repository, aligned to Microsoft’s Cosmos DB performance guidance.
  • Introduced the OpenID Connect flow for the Angular front end, and helped build Azure AD B2C custom policies for tenant-specific identity providers.
  • Added CSV serialization to a core API method, cutting response size by two to four times.
  • Introduced a Git workflow with proper branching and pull requests.

.NET Instructor IT Cloud Academy

2016 – 2018

Part-time

  • Taught a four-month .NET 101 course, from loops and variables through to database design and ASP.NET MVC.
  • Wrote new lectures on collections, LINQ, reflection and concurrency, each paired with graded coding problems.
  • Built the student portal that compiles and validates submissions automatically using the Roslyn compiler.

Full-stack .NET Developer Langate

2015 – 2018

Multitenant social recognition SaaS used by Fortune 500 companies

  • Took features end to end in a 20+ engineer team: functional and non-functional requirements, data model, architecture, back end, front end, and smoke testing across environments.
  • Tracked down a memory leak that had been forcing a daily production restart and causing non-deterministic behavior.
  • Cut worst-case page load by five times using PerfView, Apache JMeter, MiniProfiler and StackExchange tooling.
  • Introduced a multi-instance cache with Redis pub/sub invalidation.
  • Refactored the Azure Service Bus layer, taking roughly a second off every send.
  • Led the engineering side of a Salesforce integration alongside an external consultancy.
  • Introduced a feature-branch Git workflow, which simplified deployments and gave pull requests a real review step.
  • Represented the team in architectural meetings with internal and external architects on integration options and technical debt.

Junior .NET Developer ITCraft

2014 – 2015

eCommerce for one of the largest camera retailers in the US

  • Delivered mostly back-end features as part of a 50+ person team.
  • Wrote a new image server handling resizing and sorting.
  • Built the ETL process feeding the databases and the Endeca search server.
  • Simplified the data access layer with a Dapper-style workflow over a legacy MySQL server.

Personal projects

  • Piano 3D: my mobile piano app built with Unity. Over 800,000 downloads, and it was featured in a Microsoft TV advertisement.
  • DoDidDone: an app for learning English irregular verbs, built on the Windows 10 design guidelines.
  • This blog: technical writing, mostly about .NET. Around 1,200 visitors a month, with several articles ranking in Google’s top five.
